Owl on a branch across shoulder and chest

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a large owl tattoo with forward-facing eyes, perched on a bare branch that extends down across the upper chest. The feathers are built up with fine layered shading in black and grey, giving the bird dimension and texture. The crop cuts off the subject's face, and the warm, dim lighting shows the skin and the tattoo's tonal range.

The owl had been watching the lighthouse keepers' cottages for three winters before anyone thought to ask what it wanted. I was the one who asked, mostly because Dorothy Pell had stopped sleeping and blamed the bird for it. She wouldn't come out to the step after dark. She kept the shutters closed and left a saucer of milk on the sill for something she would not name.

I took the harbour lamp watch that month, which meant walking the breakwater from dusk until the tide turned, with a hand torch I never switched on. The owl was always on the same bare ash that leaned out over the slip, its eyes level with mine, unblinking as two pale coins. Men who had fished these waters all their lives would not look at it. I looked back. That seemed to be the whole of the trick.

In March the ash came down in a gale, and Dorothy was found the next morning on the slip with her hand flat on the wet trunk, her lips blue, the saucer of milk untouched behind her. The owl was gone. Nobody said it had flown off to find another keeper, though I think some of them believed it. I still walk the breakwater. Sometimes, past the last buoy, something lifts off a branch I can no longer see and turns once over the water, slow and patient, to make sure I am still counting.
