Peacock tattoo along the side ribs and hip

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large peacock in profile wraps across the side of the torso, with its head and crest near the ribs and its tail and body extending down to the hip. The feathers and head are rendered with smooth shading, fine detail in the eye and scales, and soft highlights. Strong teal, blue, green and yellow inks dominate, with small touches of brown and orange in the tail.

At ten past three the ward lights were turned down to their amber setting, and Ruth Caddick was counting saline bags on the trolley when the call bell above bay four began to chime. Mr Pryce had one good hand flat on the blanket and a beaker of water he had not touched. "Not for me," he said when she lifted it out. "For the light. My grandmother kept a peacock on the farm above Shrewsbury. The bird used to scream before rain like a child being smacked, and she'd sweep up every feather that dropped and never let one into the house. Said the eyes looked back at you when you'd gone to bed." He smiled at the ceiling. "Hold it up to the lamp and see if it's watching you."

Ruth held it under the reading light. The eye at the tip caught the lamp and opened into teal, then green, then a gold so deep it seemed to have a hinge in it. The barbs shivered in the warm air from the vent. Somewhere down the corridor a trolley wheel squeaked and stopped.

He was asleep before she had finished her observations, his breathing slow and even under the sheet. She slid the feather back into the vase, angled so the eye faced the door, and wrote 03:20, settled, in the notes, and nothing else. On the way out she noticed the light from the nurses' station had found it too, and for a moment the whole row of beds seemed to be watched by something patient and bright.
