Realistic pink dahlia with green leaves

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large, detailed bloom with layered pink and red petals and pale cream highlights sits at the centre of the design, resembling a dahlia. Soft blended shading and fine petal veining give the flower a lifelike, three-dimensional look. Green leaves and stems fill the background and extend across the skin, with purple and magenta tones in the outer petals.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The judge had passed the Pargeter bench twice before he stopped, and Edie knew from the way he stopped that it was the wrong sort of stopping. He lifted the pink decorative from its jam jar as if it might bruise, turned it to the window of the Methodist hall, and said nothing at all.

Her husband had raised the seedlings in a cold frame behind the chapel, pinching them back in July so the strength went into the head and not the stalk. Edie had kept them through the September frost with a paraffin heater and the wireless turned low, feeding them comfrey tea from a tin that had once held Coronation toffees. The bloom in the jar had layered petals like the inside of a shell, a blush of purple creeping up from the edges, and a pale cream heart where the light seemed to gather and stay.

"Mrs Pargeter," the judge said at last, "who taught you to lift the outer petals like that?"

She did not tell him it was Harold, who had shown her with a fingernail in the kitchen before he went down the pit at Brackley and did not come back up the morning after. She only said that the frame had been sheltered by the chapel wall, which was true, and that the soil had been turned by hand, which was also true.

The red card went on the jar with a drawing pin. Edie cut the bloom at dusk, carried it home along the Sunday road with the petals turned out to catch what was left of the sun, and set it on the windowsill where Harold's chair had always faced.
