Realistic pink rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pink rose in bloom sits on the outer forearm, shown from slightly above with its petals curling outward from a tight centre. The petals use smooth gradients of pink, magenta and red, with grey shading along the folds that gives the flower volume. The photograph has a warm vintage filter and a soft focus, with a grey fabric sleeve blurred on the left and a dark background on the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At ten past three the ward at St Aidan's went quiet in the way Ruth had learned to distrust. Bed nine's monitor had settled, and somewhere a trolley wheel ticked against the lino. She stood at the desk with the observations sheet in one hand and a paper cone of pink roses in the other, the cellophane already beaded from the sluice tap.

Mr Okafor's daughter had brought them at teatime, bought from the garage forecourt, and asked Ruth to put one where her father could see it without turning his head. He could no longer turn his head. Ruth had found a jam jar, filled it at the sink, and set the best bloom in it, the one whose outer petals had opened just enough to show a deeper red at their edges, curling back from a tight pale heart shaded grey at the folds.

At half three he woke and asked the time, then asked whether the rose was real. Ruth said it was. He said his wife had grown them along the back fence in Harrogate, and the trick was to let the outer petals go dark before the centre gave way, or they looked like paper. Ruth said she would remember that. He said his wife never remembered anything either, and that was why she had married him, and Ruth laughed quietly over the bed rail until he smiled.

Before dawn she came back with the obs and found one petal had dropped onto the blanket, a magenta curl no bigger than a thumbnail. She didn't return it to the jar. She folded it into her breast pocket beside the pen, then wrote 03:52 on the chart in a steadier hand than she'd managed all night.
