Pink rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large pink rose seen from above fills the upper part of the forearm, with its inner petals curled into a tight centre. The petals use smooth, blended shading that moves from pale pink to deep magenta at the edges, with grey tones giving the bloom depth. The rose sits against plain skin and a grey fabric background, with the arm photographed at a slight angle.

You carry the rose up the hundred and twelve steps in a tin bath because the supply boat won't come again before October, and your father says a plant that survives the crossing deserves a window. The bush is the only thing on Scarrow Rock that isn't grey or salt-white, and by the time you reach the top your forearms are scraped raw from the wicker handles. You set it on the gallery sill where the lamp can warm it, and you tell it the same things your mother used to tell the gulls.

The gale comes in the second week of September. The clockwork that turns the lens sticks at ten past three, and the great glass stops sweeping while the sea throws itself at the base of the tower. You wind the mechanism by hand, counting turns against the ache in your shoulders, while the lantern room shudders and the rose bobs in its tub like a drowning thing. Your father is on the mainland with the fever, so there is only you, the lamp and a Northumbrian fishing crew somewhere out past the reef, depending on a beam that isn't turning.
At four the wind drops for a minute, and in that minute you see the last bloom has opened overnight, pale at the tip and deepening to magenta where the petals curl back on themselves. You cut it with your father's penknife, pin its petals one by one to the wet glass, and the lamp's light passes through them and comes out soft and rose-coloured across the black water. Two hours later a boat's lantern answers from the reef, steady and small, and you keep your hand on the crank until it's safely in.
