Red rose on upper back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A large red rose fills the frame, with its outer petals opening out to the right and its tightly curled centre shaded in deep red and near black. The petals are rendered with smooth gradients and soft edges, giving a three-dimensional, lifelike effect. The rose is placed off-centre on bare skin, with the edge of the shoulder visible at the top left.

Dear Ruth,

The rose I bought off the barrow outside Harrowby Junction was the colour of a bruise by the time the 4.12 pulled in, and I nearly threw it on the line. The man on the barrow swore it would last the journey to Leeds. He had not reckoned on the wait. Three hours on the bench under the clock, with the porter shouting about a signal at Thornley, and the petals began to go dark at their edges, folding inward like the pages of a book somebody has closed too fast.

I am writing this on the back of a timetable because the buffet has run out of paper and I did not want to lose my nerve before the next train. You will say I am being dramatic. You will be right. But you did not see how the light came through the glass roof onto the rose when I held it up, and how the red went almost black in the middle, where the petals curl in on themselves as if keeping a secret.

I have decided I am not getting on the train. I know that is not what you wanted to read in the last letter. I know your mother is still counting the spoons. But I found the rose again in my coat pocket, and it had stopped being a rose and become something more like a promise, and promises should not travel without the person who made them.

So I am walking back out past the barrow. I am going to give this letter to the porter, and he can post it to you with a stamp I cannot afford. If you come to the station on Thursday, look for a man with no ticket and one bad flower. I will be the one pretending not to wait.

Yours, always, Thomas
