Black and grey realism full sleeve with religious and skull

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Five photographs show a full sleeve tattoo from the shoulder towards the wrist, displayed as a collage of different angles. The design includes a bearded figure with a crown of thorns, skulls, a praying figure with a sugar skull face, a female figure with a banner, roses, a cherub and an eye. The work uses fine black and grey shading with smooth tonal gradients against a dark background.

Dear Tomás, the frost split the north cloister again, so Prior Eduardo has me on a ladder with a wire brush, scraping soot from the stone saints while Brother Anselm holds the rope and sings badly under his breath. The bearded Christ above the lectern is the worst. Someone has pressed a thumb into his brow, and the thorns catch the lamplight in a way that makes the novices look up at him during Compline.

Last Tuesday I found the thing that has kept me awake. Behind the carved roses on the pillar by the well, a skull peers out from the leaves, and beside it a small cherub with its face worn to a smudge. Anselm says the old mason, Brother Fidel, carved them the winter his sister died, and that he asked to be buried facing the wall so nobody would see him weep. I do not know if that is true. Anselm tells stories the way other men cough.

That evening I went back to the pillar with a damp cloth and cleaned the eye carved just above the skull, the one that looks down at the well as if it keeps a ledger of who draws water. It came up bright. Then I stopped, because the rest of the column was still grey and I could not bring myself to make the skull match it. I left the grime settled in its sockets.

I have decided a monastery needs at least one thing it does not explain. Pray for me, and for the stones. Your brother, Mateo.
