Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A nine-panel collage of realistic coloured tattoos on arms, mostly roses in red, pink, purple and white. Panels include a close-up red rose with a gold ornament, a sleeve of pink and red blooms, and a faceted red gem with ornate framing. Smooth blended shading, fine petal detail and water droplets dominate, with each panel shot at a different angle and distance.

He wanted the whole lot binned. The auction house in Ledbury had sent word that the purple consignment was going to a man from Hereford who paid in cash and never looked at the stems. Ada wrapped the red rose in a square of tissue paper instead, set a single drop of water on its outer petal where the misting had caught it, and carried it to the back office as if it might crack.

Colley found her there at dusk, the bloom standing in a jam jar, its petals gone dark as the inside of a claret glass. He said nothing about the auction. He only asked what she meant to do with it. Ada said she would let it open one more day, and then she would press it between the pages of the seed catalogue, so that next spring, when the heaters came on and the purples came in grey, someone would still have a red one to look at.

Outside, the first rain slid down the glass and stopped on the sill, bright as a stone.
