Purple rose and camera sleeve on upper arm

Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large purple rose with dew droplets covers the shoulder, with green leaves at its edges. Below it on the upper arm, a camera lens, a blue bird and a sepia-toned portrait of a man continue the sleeve. The panels are shown in a collage with three close-up photographs, using smooth shading and vivid colour.

The camera came off the four-ten with nobody's name on the strap, and Nell Harrow carried it to the lost property shelf because that was the rule at Tallow Cross. The shelf had held two umbrellas and a single glove for eleven years, and nobody had come for either.

She could not leave the camera alone. Each evening after the last train she took it out onto the platform and photographed what the station had: the blue tit that nested in the signal box gutter, the old pink rose Walter Pike tended by the gate, and the dew that clung to its petals before the sun reached them. She developed the film in the coal cupboard by lamplight. Every roll showed the same grey-coated man, half turned away, standing at the far end of the platform where no one stood.

Walter said the man had waited there in the years before the line closed, for a sister who was meant to step off the Thursday train and never did. Nell did not believe in such things, but she believed in film. On the last Thursday she sat on the bench with the camera in her lap until the lamps began to hum. When the grey coat came down the platform, she raised the lens and found she could not press the shutter. He took it gently from her hands and pressed it himself.

The bird lifted from the signal box. A bead of water fell from the rose by the gate onto the sleeper. When Nell developed the roll, there was one frame of the platform, empty except for a woman on the bench with her hands folded, smiling as though someone had finally come down the steps.
