Realistic rose with water droplets on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large rose with layered petals, pale pink at the edges and deeper coral at the centre, sits on the skin with several glossy water droplets on its petals. Green leaves sit around the base and top, with soft shading and highlights giving the design depth. The central colour panel is framed by two greyscale versions of the same rose on the left and right.

Dear Ada,

The road over the tops closed on Tuesday and it is still shut, so you will have to forgive the paper, which is the last of the good stock from the back office. Mr Hallam's carter left a note under the door saying the drifts at Cold Cross are higher than a man on a horse, and that we are to make do until the thaw. We are making do. The cook has counted the flour twice, and the taproom has taken to playing cards by the range in their coats.
The rose is the thing I want to tell you about. You remember the cutting Grandmother took from the wall at Hollins, wrapped in wet sacking and cursed all the way down the valley? It went into the scullery window in a jam jar, and I had given it up for dead by November. This morning there was a bloom on it. Coral at the heart, the outer petals gone the pale colour of skimmed milk, and on every petal a bead of water that I swear had not been there at dawn. The stove is cold, the glass is furred with frost, and still it sweated.
I took it through to Mr Hallam, who said it was only condensation, and then stood a long while in front of it with his hat in his hands. He did not say anything else. I think he was remembering the summer his wife kept roses in that same window, before the fever.
I have set the jar on the bar where the lamps can reach it. If the pass opens by Thursday I will bring you a cutting of your own, though I am not sure you will thank me for the trouble.
Yours in haste and in the cold, Martha
