Black and grey realism tattoo of a skull with shaded bony shapes across the back of a hand, with small lettering on the fingers.

Realistic skull on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed skull fills the back of the hand, shown in smooth black and grey shading with highlights on the cranium and deep shadows in the eye sockets and jaw. Dark, sweeping bands above the skull resemble ribs or bone structure and fade into the skin toward the wrist. Small letter-style marks sit on the fingers, and another tattoo is partly visible at the top left of the frame against a blue denim background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferrymen of Harrowmere never took coin for the crossing. They asked for a name instead, cut small into the knuckle, and you were the one sent to cut them, because your father's hands had begun to shake over the bone-gouge and the Lord Reeve wanted the work finished before the autumn floods. On the first morning the river was the colour of old pewter, and the boatman held out his hand palm down so you could read the letters running across his fingers.

Those letters were the only record the kingdom kept. Each ferryman carried the names of everyone he had taken over, and when the last finger was full he laid his skull on the grey shelf of the Hollow Ribs, a vaulted cave where the drowned kings had been stacked like unfinished sentences. You had spent three winters learning the shading that made bone look wet. Nobody had ever told you whose skull you were painting.

On the seventh night the boatman showed you the shelf and the empty place where his own would go. He said the sweeping bands above the skull were the ribs of the boat, that a ferry is nothing but a bone frame and a hope. You worked until the lamp guttered, shading the eye sockets so deep the ink seemed to swallow the light, and on the last finger you wrote your own name in letters so small nobody would ever read it.

At dawn the boat was gone and the mist was lifting off the water. On the bank lay a pale shape the length of a hand, and for a moment you thought it was his. It was only a stone, its fingers worn smooth as ladle handles. You took up the chisel, the river said nothing, and you went home to draw the next one.
