Crowned skull and sunflower on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A photograph of a realistic tattoo on the lower leg showing a human skull wearing a gold crown with red velvet, set with green and red jewels. A large orange sunflower sits at the base of the design beside the lower jaw. The shading is smooth and detailed, with dark black and grey background tones behind the skull and warm colour in the crown and flower.

The lost property box at Coldharbour Junction held everything anyone had ever been too tired to collect: umbrellas, a prosthetic leg, two wedding rings, a child's left shoe. Mira Dunsby had logged them all for eleven years. The crown was different. It had been wedged behind the radiator on platform four, its gilt gone brown at the rims and its red velvet sagging like a tongue. When she lifted it to the strip light, a bead of green glass winked at her as if it knew her.

Inside the crown, tucked where a head would have sat, was a skull. Not real, she decided after a long look, though the teeth had been carved with a fussy care that made her wince. Someone had painted it bone-coloured, with grey shadows pooled in the eye sockets. Under the lining, folded small, was a ticket stub for a journey that had ended at Saltmarsh forty years before, and a pressed sunflower with its petals gone the colour of old pennies.
She thought of the man who used to come every Tuesday to buy a single sunflower from the kiosk and never once board a train. Gerald, the flower seller had called him. He had stopped coming in March. Mira set the crown on the bench beneath the timetable board, laid the sunflower beside it, and went back to the box to write the entry: Crown, one, velvet, damaged. Owner unknown.
The 17:42 to Saltmarsh sighed into the platform, and a woman in a green coat stopped dead at the sight of the bench. She looked at the crown for a long moment, then picked up the sunflower and walked to the last carriage. Mira watched through the glass as the flower slowly turned its face to the window, following the train out into the dark.
