The Pennock orchard has gone to rot at the bottom end, and I've been clearing the old perry trees by the brook since Monday. You'll laugh, but Mother was right about the ground there. Under the third stump my spade turned up a skull, grey as a river stone and split along the brow like a dropped plate. Its sockets were packed with a blue-green fungus, the kind that glows in the damp, so when I lifted it into the lamplight it looked as though it had been watching me all along.

I didn't tell Dad. He'd only want it buried in the churchyard with a fuss and a prayer. Instead I carried it up to the packing shed and set it on the windowsill beside the Bramley crates. Every evening since, the teal has brightened as the light goes, and by the time the wasps have settled it lights the whole back wall green. Mrs Haddow from the next farm came by for her cider and swore she'd seen it move.

I've decided it can stay. The apples are coming in heavy this year, and I think whoever he was would like to be useful. I've turned the nasal gap towards the orchard gate, so he can keep an eye on who comes and goes.
