Realistic skull on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a dark surface, with a large skull tattooed across the back of it. The skull has deep eye sockets, a grimacing jaw with visible teeth and a ridged, textured top, and the bone is built up with soft gradients and high contrast shading. The image is in black and grey, with a shallow focus that softens the background.

The fog had come down over Harrow Lane junction before the last northbound, and Tobias Vane was still fighting the lamp at the end of platform two when the stranger asked him for a light. He had no matches. He had a lamp that wouldn't catch and a bell that the old drivers swore rang by itself when someone was about to be carried off the line.

The man held out his hand, palm down, as if he were showing a card. Across the back of it a skull sat grinning, deep-socketed, its ridged brow pushed up over the knuckles like the crest of a wave. Its jaw worked. "You have a light in you, boy," it said, in a voice like coal shifting in a grate. "I'll take it, and you may keep your train."
Tobias thought of his mother's kitchen, the stove he had been told to keep lit, and the three carriages of sleeping miners he could not bear to see crushed on the curve. He said he would give what he had, which was only the last of his breath on a cold night. He blew, and the wick caught blue. The skull's teeth clicked shut around the flame and went quiet. Out in the fog the bell rang once, a thin tinny sound, and the northbound slid in on time with every window lit.
Nobody on that train remembered the man, and the boy grew into a signalman with a steady hand and no great ambitions. Some nights, when the line is quiet, he holds his own palm out to the lamp and watches the shadows find their way into the bones of it. He has never once struck a match he did not need.
