Sketched lion head with geometric shapes on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A lion's head is drawn in loose, sketchy black linework, with the mane shown as flowing strands and small curled details at the top. Behind the head, angular geometric panels and lines are filled with teal and pale green wash that fades into the skin. The ink is mostly black lines with soft colour accents, and the design is framed close around the head on a thigh.

The reunion was held in the old Infants' hall on Mill Lane, and Margaret Hollis brought the jotter nobody could remember losing. She set it open on the trestle table beside the squash and the sausage rolls. On the page was a lion drawn in soft pencil, its mane made of long strands that ran off the edge of the box, and behind its head were angles no child would ever have ruled by choice, filled in with a green wash that had dried the colour of pond water.

The boy who drew it was Tommy Reid, who could not finish a sum and would not stop looking at the window. Mr Dunn set the class a map of the county that year, and Tommy, bored past bearing, drew the lion instead over the top of the rivers. Each time he tried to close the mane, the straight lines of the ruler crept in and made the lion a little more square, a little more sharp at the corners, until the teacher gave up and let it stand. The paint pot had been left on the sill, and when the sun came round the lion took on the teal of it.
That afternoon, as the tea urn sighed, the lines on the page began to loosen. Eileen Marsh found her own name written under the lion's left eye, in a hand she had forgotten she owned. Nobody saw the lion leave, but when they went out to the car park at six, the mud in the lane had the shape of a great head pressed into it, and one long strand of mane lay on the wet bonnet of Eileen's car, green at the tips, as if someone had meant it as a return.
