Realistic wolf head on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large wolf head is tattooed on the outer thigh of a bent leg, with its snout and open jaw turned toward the viewer. The fur is rendered with soft grey shading and fine dark strands, giving the face strong contrast and depth. The image is in black and grey only, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame against plain skin and a grey floor.

The fair came into the market town of Hollin Dale on the Thursday, when the rain had stopped long enough for the canvas to dry. Old Meg Fenwick had the bearing wagon at the far end, and in it, behind a curtain of sacking, was a grey wolf that nobody had ever seen eat anything but bread soaked in milk.

Her grandson Tom was seven and wanted to see it. She told him no. Wolves were not for looking at by boys with sticky hands. He went round the back anyway, the way boys do, and found the sacking pulled aside and the animal lying with its jaw open on the boards, panting the way a dog does in August. He did not run. He sat down on an upturned crate and told it about his day. The wolf listened with its ears flat. When the lamps came on along the midway, the wolf got up and walked out past the cowshed to the edge of the hill, and stood there looking down at the lights.
Meg found the boy at dusk, sitting on the crate alone with the sacking still pulled back. She did not shout. She had kept the fair thirty years and knew what a wolf in a strange town was owed. She followed the paw marks up the wet slope and found the animal waiting at the stile, its muzzle lifted toward the valley, as though it were counting the houses.
The next morning the fair packed up early and went on to Kettle Bridge without the wagon. Nobody in Hollin Dale ever saw the grey wolf again, though the boy kept a crate by his bed and set a dish of milk on it each night, and in the morning the milk was always gone.
