Swallow on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A swallow in flight with its wings spread diagonally across the upper arm and its head angled down towards the elbow. The bird is drawn with fine feather linework and soft grey shading that gives the body volume. The ink is entirely black and grey against the skin, and the arm and a grey top fill the frame.

The clerk at Halsa Ford kept a ledger for everything that crossed the river: sheep, salt, letters, the dead in their coffins. Swallows he did not record, because his grandmother had told him they paid their own tolls, a feather for every border. So when the first pair came over the bridge in April, one of them dropped a grey feather onto his desk, and he sat looking at it until the lamp needed trimming.

The feather was not from either of the swallows. It was longer, darker at the tip, and it smelled of the far bank, where the lord of Orrin had hanged a miller that winter for carrying grain without a stamp. The clerk knew the miller's wife. She sent word by birds because the post would not carry it. Her message was a single line: the river is high, bring the boat round by the willows.
He did not go. He told himself the willows were watched and the boat had been burned, which was true, and that a clerk with a ledger was not a smuggler, which was less certain. In May a swallow came back alone and perched on the gate post, head angled down as if reading the latch. He tied a reply to its leg with thread from his own cuff and let it go over the water.
By midsummer the lord's men had stopped searching the stables for birds. The clerk wrote the crossing down that night, in the column for the living, and beneath it a single entry: one swallow, one feather, one fare paid.
