Realistic wolf sleeve with forest backdrop
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic wolf's head with detailed fur and intense eyes fills the upper arm, set against dark tree trunks that fade upward. The forest scene continues down the forearm with soft shading and fine texture. The tattoo is rendered entirely in black and grey ink, with strong contrast between the darkest shadows and lighter highlights on the fur.

You have the ovens lit by ten to four, and the flour sacks are still stacked against the back wall where Mrs Okafor left them. The dough for the tin loaves has been proving since midnight, sagging under its cloths like something asleep. You hear a scrape at the yard gate before you see anything, a claw or a bolt, and you think of the fox that has been raiding bins along Calder Lane. You do not go to look. You knead.

Then the back door swings open under its own weight, letting in cold air that smells of wet bark and pine needles, the smell of the wood beyond the allotments that nobody on this street walks into after dark. A wolf stands on the mat. It is larger than you imagined, its ruff grey at the edges and black along the spine, and its eyes hold yours steadily, the way a customer's eyes hold yours when they are deciding whether to trust your scales. Past it, where the yard should be, trunks rise into a sky that has no business being there.
You do not reach for the rolling pin. You tear the heel from the cooling rye and set it on the floured board, and the wolf comes forward with the patience of something that has waited a long time to be offered anything at all. It eats slowly. Its breath steams in the lamplight. When it is done it turns, and in the doorway the forest has crept a little closer, the way trees do when nobody is watching.
At six Ruth arrives with the keys and finds the board bare, a single crumb on the tiles, and the back door hanging wide on the morning. She asks where the rye went. You tell her the truth, that you fed the woods some breakfast, and she laughs and says you were always soft on strays. You do not correct her. Outside, the yard is only a yard again, but the mud by the gate is printed with four large paws, all of them pointing back the way the trees go.
