Geometric wolf head on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head faces forward, with the left half rendered realistically in fur and shading and the right half broken into angular, faceted triangles. The yellow-green eye on the realistic side and the blue eye on the geometric side are the only colour in an otherwise black and grey piece. Strong contrast between the soft fur and the hard-edged shapes gives the composition its focus, set against a blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fiddler had played the same three tunes since midsummer, and by the harvest dance the boards of the hall at Ashcombe Lowe were scored with the marks of a hundred boots. Nobody heard the wolf come in. The door stood open for the heat, and when Hanne looked up from the bench there was a wolf at the edge of the lamplight. One side of him was grey and shaggy as a winter coat. The other side was cut into sharp pieces, like a window broken by frost. His yellow eye was on the fur side and his blue eye on the cut side, and both of them were looking at her.

Nobody moved. The old men said afterwards that the wolf had spoken, though Hanne only remembered that he asked, in a voice like gravel in a bucket, whether anyone would dance with the half that had been left out. Her mother hissed her name. Hanne stood anyway, because the fiddler had started the third tune again and she did not want to be the one who let it stop.

He was careful with her. The soft side of him breathed warm against her shoulder, and the cut side caught the lamplight so that the floor around them was pricked with small pale triangles that slid and turned as they went round. When the tune ended he pressed his muzzle to her palm, and it was cold as slate. Then he went out into the dark the way he had come.

In the morning there were nine pale triangles on the boards by the door, each one cold to the touch and gone by noon. Hanne kept one in a tin on the shelf, and the tin was still there when the hall burned down forty years later, and nobody could say what had become of the rest.
