The barrier arm had jammed at half past six again, so Marta Holm walked out along the frontier road with a torch and a clipboard she had stopped writing on weeks ago. The fir trees either side had gone the colour of wet slate. Beyond the last post, the forest rose in bare birch and black trunks, and the mist sat in it like something poured and forgotten.

The wolf was already there, on the far side of the white line, where the tarmac gave way to moss. It did not come closer. It never did. Its head hung low and its eyes caught the torchlight and held it, the way the customs men in the old stories said the wood held a man who strayed. Marta had seen it four nights running. The log at the post recorded nothing, because nothing crossed.

On the fifth night she switched the torch off. The wolf watched her in the dark for a long minute, then turned and walked into the trees with a slowness that felt like courtesy. She waited for the motor behind her to grind the barrier back into place, and it did not. Either someone had finally fixed it or the wind had lifted the arm from its catch, and the road lay open in both directions.

She wrote one line in the log before she went home: Nothing to declare. Then she added the time beside it, because the wolf had been the only traveller that night, and it had not asked to be stamped.
