Realistic wolf head on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large wolf head faces the camera, with its ears cropped at the top edge of the frame and its muzzle centred lower down. The fur is built from fine, layered black and grey shading with soft highlights, and the pale blue eyes are the only colour. The design fills most of the frame against a close crop of skin on the thigh.

Dear Tom,

The snow came in on Tuesday and hasn't shifted from the top field since. Dad says the wolf has been down off the ridge again, the big grey one with the pale eyes. Two ewes were found by the beck on Monday morning, lying where they'd lain down to sleep, and not a mark on either of them. Dad just stood with his hat in his hands and said nothing for a long while.

Mum has put the lamp in the byre window and told me not to go out after dark. I went anyway on Thursday with the feed bucket, because the hay was down to the last bale and the wind had found every gap in my coat. It was standing at the gate in the moonlight, not hunting, only looking at me with eyes the colour of the ice on the trough. I thought it would run. It didn't. It looked at the bucket, then back at me, and I understood it was as hungry as we were.

I didn't put anything out. I did leave the gate latch lifted, though. The next morning the bucket was empty and licked clean, and the snow was printed with paws the size of my palm running down towards the wood. Dad hasn't mentioned it, which is how I know he saw them too.

Come home at Christmas if the road's open. Bring that lighthouse book you borrowed from the library and never returned. Lambing starts in March and I could use a second pair of hands, and I think the wolf and I have come to an arrangement. Your loving sister, Nell.

P.S. Don't tell Dad about the latch.
