Rearing horse with ornamental detail on thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A rearing horse with a flowing, wave-like mane fills the upper thigh, its body decorated with scrolling ornamental patterns and a saddle-like panel. The design combines bold outlines with fine lines and stippled dotwork shading that creates tonal depth across the mane, body and hooves. The tattoo is rendered only in black and grey ink and is centred on the leg, with a dark garment visible at the left and a hand at the top right.

The horse came off the lorry on the second Tuesday of January, wrapped in a tarpaulin gone stiff with frost, and my uncle Desmond swore it had been dead for thirty years before anybody thought to wind it up. Gran said the fair had folded in 1979 and the family had kept the carousel parts in the Dutch barn ever since, under sacks of seed potatoes that never got planted. I was nineteen and paid by the hour to scrape rust.

The rearing one was the last in the crate. Its mane had been carved in long waves that caught the lamplight, and someone had cut scrolls along its flank and a saddle panel shaped like a shield. Desmond wanted it sold to a man in Ludlow who collected such things. I wanted to see it run. On the Thursday, with snow coming down over the yard and the cattle bawling in the far shed, I took the pole and the brass ring from the cupboard and turned the old mechanism by hand.
It groaned. The horse lifted its forelegs with a jerk, as if it had been waiting, and the whole barn filled with the tinny sound of the organ we had never managed to fix. Desmond stood in the doorway with his cap in his hands and said nothing for a long time.
When the snow stopped we loaded the rest onto the lorry for Ludlow, but the rearing horse stayed, its hooves still raised, and I have never told the collector it is not for sale. Some mornings I go out to check the padlock and find its painted eyes turned towards the lane, as though it has been listening for the fair to come back.
