Raptor standing on a hand on the thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A dinosaur, resembling a raptor, stands on an open hand drawn beside it, with a small sprig of foliage at the lower left. The design is built from fine, sketchy black linework with soft grey shading on the body and the hand. The image is tightly framed on a thigh, with the dinosaur filling the upper half and a pair of shorts visible at the top edge.

The frost had come early to Harrowby Fell that year, and the beck froze black at the edges by Martinmas. Old Ruth Calder found the creature in the lee of the byre wall, a thing no longer than her forearm, its scales the colour of wet slate and its eyes like two struck matches. It was shivering. She could not think what it was, only that it was not a fox and not a lamb, and that the hens would have it by morning if she left it there.

She carried it in her apron to the kitchen and set it on the table beside the bread. It did not bite. It stood up on its back legs and looked at her the way the vicar looked at a poor sermon. Then she held out her hand, palm up, the way she fed the ewes, and the creature stepped onto it and held still. Its claws were fine as needles. Its weight was nothing at all. Ruth had lived sixty-one years on that farm and never once been trusted by anything that was not a dog.
Through February she fed it bruised windfalls and warm milk from a saucer, and in return it walked the length of her palm each morning like a clerk checking a ledger. In March a sprig of hawthorn came up through the snow under the wall, green where nothing else was. She picked it and laid it in the creature's hand. It turned the leaves over with one claw, chewed one, and Ruth decided that was as good as agreement.
When the thaw came the creature climbed to her shoulder and looked down the valley, then back at her. She opened her palm once more. It stepped on, lifted its head, and let itself be carried to the gate, where she set it down in the wet grass. It did not look back. Ruth went in and washed the saucer, and the kitchen smelled of hawthorn for a week.
