Red and black lattice sleeve on an arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A man's arm is covered by a full sleeve of repeating geometric shapes, with diamond and zigzag lattice lines that appear to bend around the limb. The linework is mainly black, with red fills that create a striped, optical effect along the arm. The dark clothing and background keep the focus on the tattoo, which fills the frame from shoulder to wrist.

Mrs Orla Penhallow had mended the big top for thirty-one winters, and this one she could not stitch closed. The canvas had gone the colour of weak tea along the seams, and the red diamonds she had painted on each panel in her first season had bled into the cream until they looked like something seen through rain. The bank in Swindon wanted the ground by March. The Marvello Brothers wanted a miracle, or at least a full house on the last Saturday.

Her grandson Tomas came in from the lot with a coil of guy-line over one shoulder and sawdust in his hair. He had been sleeping in the lion wagon, he said, because the caravan heater had died. She didn't ask him to explain. She handed him the needle and pointed at the lattice, where a zigzag had come loose from its diamond like a thread pulled from a sock.
They worked until the lamps guttered. The pattern ran in a long diagonal across the canvas, and the trick, she said, was that the eye could never decide which lines sat in front. Tomas thought of the high wire, of the rigging crossing overhead, of the net the acrobats no longer used because the insurers had stopped paying for it.
On Saturday the tent filled to half. Nobody came for the clowns. They came to stand beneath the lattice and watch the red bend and fold as the lamps swung, the whole canvas breathing as though it had been pulled tight over something alive. Orla stood at the back with her hands in her coat pockets and let the illusion do its work. Tomas said the tent looked like it was holding its breath. She said that was the point. The bank could wait until Monday.
