Faceted geometric line tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm is shown in black and white with a geometric tattoo of a faceted, crystal-like shape drawn in thin, uniform black lines. The outline wraps around the arm just below the elbow, with a rounded edge where it meets the skin and sharp points extending down toward the wrist. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the linework and the form of the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The glass-cutter on Reed Lane had one rule above all others: no stone leaves the bench until it has been turned three times in lamplight. Tavi, the salt-merchant's girl he had taken on for her quick hands, broke it the autumn the caravans stopped coming. She carried a grey lump of quartz up the hill at dusk, past the goats, to the cistern where the old woman sold water by the measure, and she set it down on the wet flags without a word.

The old woman did not look at the stone. She laid her palm on it and asked how many sides it had. Tavi said none, it was only a lump. The woman said every stone has as many sides as there are ways to hold it, and that stone is only cut where it is willing to break. Then she took a length of bronze wire and drew on the cistern wall, in one unbroken line, a diamond with its point driven down toward the floor, and inside it she drew the lines where the light would fall.

Tavi spent the winter following those lines. Each blow split the quartz along a plane the wire had shown her, and each split left a face that caught the lamp and threw a bright triangle onto the bench. By the thaw she had a stone of eleven facets, clear as cold water. The merchants came up from the harbour to ask whose workshop had made it, and she sent them all to the cistern.

The old woman held the stone to the light, turned it once, and gave it back. ‘You have cut it,’ she said. ‘Now take up the wire.’ Tavi looked at the wall and saw a faint score running from the diamond's point down to the floor, a line she had never drawn. She knelt, pressed the bronze into the wet stone, and followed it down to the flags.
