Solid black forearm with pale skin stripes
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and upper arm are filled with solid black ink, with two thin, curved bands of untattooed skin running lengthwise down the forearm. The black areas are smooth and even, with no visible shading or grey tones. The arm is held out against a plain light grey background, with a clenched hand at the wrist end of the frame.

Dear Tom, you will laugh at me, but the lane through Hollin Wood has gone black again. Only the two ruts stay pale, where the carts have worn the ground down to chalk. Mother still will not let me walk past the last oak without a lantern, and I have stopped arguing, because the lantern is the only thing that shows me where the path ends and the trees begin.

Father would have had the ruts cleared by now. Instead I went out on Tuesday with a billhook and Ada from the forge, and we cut back the bramble on either side until the pale bands ran clean from the stile to the ford. It took the whole afternoon. Ada said it looked as though someone had drawn a pair of lines across the wood with a thumb dipped in ash, and I said the wood had been waiting for someone to notice where it stopped.
I found your old knife in the left-hand rut, half buried, the handle gone soft with damp. I have put it on the windowsill beside the candle. When I go down to the ford at dusk I can still make out the two pale tracks from the kitchen door, and the black either side of them looks almost soft, like wool that has been left out in the rain.
Come home for harvest if you can. The ford is still there, and so am I.
