Dotwork fade on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a band of black dots that grow denser towards the elbow and thin out towards the wrist, creating a shaded gradient. The dots are evenly spaced in rows and follow the curve of the arm. The photo shows only black ink on pale skin, set against a wooden desk with a hand resting on a keyboard.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Haigh never let me near the big screen until I could count the dots without my glass. Sixty lines to the inch, he said, and every one must sit square, or the whole picture slides like a drunk on a wet deck.

The photograph came up from Hull on the Tuesday train: six trawlermen on a quay, their oilskins black, their faces a grey I could not believe was paper. Haigh tipped the plate towards the lamp. 'Where the light falls, you go small,' he said. 'Where the shadow lies, you go large. Let the eye do the mixing.'

I worked through the night with a stylus and a loupe, pricking each dot into the copper, the rows bending a little wherever the image bent. By four the sleeve of the nearest man had gone from white to near-solid ink, and the cuff had frayed to nothing but a scatter of light. I had made the shadow the heaviest part of him.

Haigh pulled the first proof at dawn and held it up to the window. The dots crowded thickest toward the dark water and thinned away toward the sky. He looked for a long time. 'Good,' he said. 'Nobody will see the dots. They'll only see the men coming up the quay.'
