Red and blue roses on both calves
Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The photo shows the backs of two lower legs, each with a large rose. The left rose is red and pink with dark shadowing and a teal leaf, and the right is blue-grey with a pink bud and dark stems. The soft colour washes sit over bold black linework, and the roses are framed by thorny stems that run down towards the ankles.

The well at Hesk had gone bitter the summer the river changed its course, so Maren walked two days north with a clay jar on each hip and a knife in her belt. Her mother had told her the roses grew wild on the old wall above the salt flats, and that a rose would only give up its thorns to someone who was not afraid of them.

She found them where the wall had fallen into the reeds. One bush bloomed red as a spilled cup of wine, and the other had opened blue-grey, the colour of the sky before rain, though no one at Hesk had ever seen a blue rose. She cut a stem from each, bound them with flax, and wrapped the cuts in wet moss. Thorns ran the length of both, and when she pulled them free they left thin dark lines on her forearms, like the ink of a scribe who had written too hard.
On the walk back the jars sloshed and the roses went limp in the heat, so at dusk she dug a hole beside the well and pressed the stems in with the bitter water. Her mother watched from the doorway and said nothing. By morning two green shoots had split the soil, one with teal leaves and one with a pink bud folded tight as a fist.
The well sweetened within a month. Nobody at Hesk asked where the roses came from, and Maren never told them that the wall was older than the river, or that the thorns had only drawn blood where she had been careless. The bushes grew tall enough to shade the water, and they still lean towards the lane, as if waiting for a traveller to come up it with empty jars.
