Red and blue roses on both calves

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows the backs of two lower legs, each with a large rose tattoo on the calf, with stems and leaves running down toward the ankle. The red rose on the left and the blue rose on the right have bold dark outlines, with soft watercolour-style washes of pink, green and grey. The subject is set against a pavement and grass, with white and coral trainers in the foreground.

The reunion was held in the function room above the Co-op, the year the school was finally sold. Nobody remembered who had booked it, but everyone came, and by nine o'clock the men were arguing about the football and the women were arguing about the men.

Ada Pell stood by the urn with her hat still on. She had not spoken to Lily Thwaite since the spring of 1979, when the two of them were caught climbing the vicarage wall to steal a rose from the bush by the vestry. The rose had been red. Lily had taken it. Ada had taken the blame, and the headmistress had kept her in for a month.

Lily crossed the room with a paper cup of sherry. 'You kept the cutting, then,' she said. Ada said nothing, because she had. It sat in a jam jar on her windowsill, rooted in rainwater, and in forty years it had never once flowered red. It had come up blue, the colour of a bruise going off, and the vicar's wife said that was the devil's joke. The vicar said it was only the soil.

'It wants a partner,' Lily said. 'One red, one blue. That's how my gran did it.' They went out to the car park in the rain and dug a hole at the corner by the bins with a trowel from Ada's boot. Nobody came to watch. By June the red one had opened, and the blue one after it, and the two bushes leaned together over the wall like girls who had never once been told to stop.
