Red and blue wing line drawings
Mixed · Flash
Two wing designs are drawn in loose, sketchy outlines on a cream, parchment-style background. The left wing is drawn in red with ragged, membrane-like edges and feathering along its length, while the right wing is drawn in blue with neat, layered feather shapes. Both are line drawings without shading, and the two wings are placed apart with plenty of empty space around them.

The ladder leans against the Bramley tree the way it always has, one foot sunk in wet grass, and you climb it with a bucket hooked over your arm while the wasps work the windfalls below. Late August in Hollow Lane orchard smells of cider and bruised fruit. Your brother is already up in the far rows, shouting that the bats have come out early and are fighting over the plums.

Your mother keeps the two wings in the cold room behind the press, pinned flat to a sheet of old estate paper. The red one, she says, came off a pipistrelle that flew into the glasshouse the spring you were born. The blue one belonged to a barn owl, or possibly a lost dove, depending on who is telling it. Neither fits anything you have ever owned. You ask which one she would wear if she had to choose, and she laughs and says the question is wrong, because the orchard only lets you carry down the ladder what you can hold in one hand.
At dusk the red wing trembles on its pin, and you carry both out to the gate and hang them there, the way she told you to, facing the hedge. By morning the windfalls have been pecked into halves and the grass is silver with dew. The wings are gone from the gate. On the path there is a single blue feather, stuck to the ragged edge of nothing, and you pick it up and find it still warm.
