Red and teal flower on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A stylised flower with layered red petals, each outlined in dark ink with teal edging, radiates from a teal centre with a circular radial pattern. The petals use soft red shading and the centre is filled with blue-teal tones, with a dark outline throughout. The flower is shown centred on the inner forearm against a plain skin background with a dark interior behind.

Dear Ruth,

The pit wheel stopped on Tuesday for the first time since the strike of your birth year, and the whole of Ashfold came out to stand in the road and stare at it, as if it might start up again if we looked hard enough. Mam says it is a judgement. Dad says it is a bearing. He has been in the shed with the lamp lit since dinner, turning a brass cup over and over in his hands.
Your dahlias came up anyway. You know the ones, the red double ones he fed with spent pit ash and swore at every August. There are eleven heads on the back row now, the petals going out in rings like the spokes of that wheel, and round every centre he has set a ring of old lamp glass, blue-green where the flame used to smoke it. He says they look like the eye of the shaft at dawn. I told him that was morbid and he laughed for the first time in a month.
I have written to the Co-op about the back pay, and to the man at the Labour office, and to the vicar, who was kind and gave me a bag of seed potatoes I did not ask for. I have not written to you until now because I did not know what to say that was not a complaint.
So I am sending you a seed packet tucked in this envelope, and one petal, pressed flat between two pages of the Gazette. Plant them in a pot on your windowsill in the city. Watch the spokes open. Tell me if the colour holds.
Love, Nell
