Daisy tattoo on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single daisy with a rounded centre and long, shaded petals is tattooed on the side of the ribs. The outlines are dark and the petals are filled with soft grey shading that gives them volume. A hand holding white tissue appears at the top left of the frame, with the tattoo centred in the lower half.

Mr Abara came into the Ashgrove garage on Hyde Road at ten past two, same as every Thursday since March, and stood at the bucket by the chiller without choosing. I'd worked the late till for six years and had learned that he never chose. He took whichever daisy sat nearest the top, paid in coins he counted twice, and was gone before the kettle behind the counter had finished clicking off.

That Thursday the rain came sideways off the Mersey and he stayed inside the doors, dripping on the mat. He said his sister used to say the daisies looked like someone had drawn them in pencil and then felt sorry about it. I asked who she was. He turned the flower in his fingers, the petals so pale under the strip light they were nearly grey, and said she had worked the early shift at the bakery opposite, the one with the blue shutters, until the shutters came down for good.

I didn't know what to say, so I told him the bakery was reopening as a vape shop, which was true and no comfort whatsoever. He laughed anyway, a short bark, and I found myself laughing too, two grown adults in a petrol station at quarter past two in the morning.

When he left, I noticed he had put the daisy back in the bucket, head down, and taken the one beside it. I went after him with the umbrella from the lost property box and caught him at the kerb. He took it without a word and held it over the flower rather than himself, as if the daisy were the one that needed keeping dry.
