Black and grey gerbera daisy tattoo with shaded petals and a dotted centre, placed on the upper thigh.

Gerbera daisy on the upper thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large gerbera daisy seen head-on, outlined in a bold black line with soft grey shading along each petal. The centre is built from fine stippled dots around a shaded disc, with a lighter highlight in the middle. The flower fills the centre of the frame against plain, lightly reddened skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Lottie, you will laugh at me, but I have been counting the dots in the middle of the gerbera Mr Abernethy left behind in room four. He forgot it, or meant to. Mother says a man who forgets a flower means to come back for it, and I told her that is the sort of thing women say when they have run out of sense. Still, I have counted three hundred and eleven so far and keep losing my place whenever the lamp goes on at the end of the sea wall.

The flower came from the barrow on the front, the one that sells the big orange ones that look ironed. He chose this grey-pink one himself, the colour of wet slate, and asked the woman to wrap the stems in yesterday's Gazette. Every petal has a dark line round it, as if someone went over it with a pencil they could not bear to lift, and the shading runs down one side of each so the whole head seems to turn away from the window towards the wall. I wish you could see it. Nothing in this house has ever looked so determined.

The tide came up over the groyne on Tuesday and sea mist sat against the glass for an hour. I drew back the curtain and the daisy was the only clear thing in the room, its middle a rounded disc, a little moon made of beads. I thought, if he comes back on the Thursday boat I will hand it over and say nothing. If he does not, I shall keep it on the sill and let it go brown in its own time, the way everything does here.

Enclosed is the card he left with the rent. Read it and tell me what I ought to do, for I have already decided and I want you to talk me out of it.
