Nell had the council's tin of grey emulsion and a roller on a pole, and the bus shelter on Harbour Row had to be clean by Monday. Someone had got there first. Across the glass, in red paint that ran at the bottom of every stroke, someone had written BAD, the letters looped into each other as if they were late for something.

She stood with the roller dripping onto her boots and looked at the A, whose crossbar had been pulled long and low like a cat stretching, and at the D, which curled back on itself as though someone had told it to behave and it had declined.

She came back the next morning with a scraper instead. Her gran was already on the bench with a flask, watching the road. "That's my hand," Gran said, not looking round. "Nineteen eighty-three. Vinegar and a toothbrush took the first one off, and your grandad said I'd be sorry. I wasn't."

Nell sat beside her. The 14 came round the corner, its brakes sighing, and the driver leaned forward to read the glass and laughed out loud. Nell put the scraper down on the step and left the grey tin unopened under the bench, where it could keep.
