Small fine-line icons on arms and legs
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person seated on a wooden bench wears a black top and a sheer black skirt, showing several small tattoos on the forearm, upper arm, thigh and lower leg. The designs are simple icons and short marks, including a palm tree, a safety pin, a can, a triangle, a number and a few short words, drawn with thin, even outlines. All the ink is black with no shading, and the scattered layout spreads the small pieces across the limbs.

Dear Tess,

You will not believe what Mick did with the lighter. We were on the pier at half eleven, the dance hall still thumping behind us through the glass, and he flicked it open and the flame wouldn't catch in the wind, so he just stood there cupping it like it was a bird. I told him to stop being soft. He said it was the last thing his nan had given him, so I shut up.
Locker twenty-three was ours all summer. The attendant, a woman called Bev with a safety pin through her lapel, kept the key on a string and never once asked for a ticket. We put the cans in there, two each night, and left the paper stubs in the gap. By August the door would not close, so the cans rolled out onto the boards and the kids from the caravan park chased them down the slope towards the palm tree someone had painted on the harbour wall, the one with the bent trunk that always looked like it was leaning in to listen.
Then the band played the old slow one, and everybody's shoes went quiet on the floor. Mick asked me to dance and I said no, because I was saving myself for the last song like a fool. He came back at closing with the lighter in his hand and a bruise coming up on his cheek from the doorman. He had the flame going again. It was lit for me, he said, for once.
I have decided to stay until the season ends. The lockers are being cleared on Monday, and I have asked Bev to keep the key. Write back soon, and tell Mum I have not been eating chips for every meal, though I have.
Love, Marnie
