Small chevron and heart tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands and forearms rest on a black and white geometric patterned textile in bright sunlight. A small fine line chevron mark sits on one wrist, and a tiny outlined heart sits on the other forearm. Both tattoos are in black ink with thin, even linework, set against the busy pattern of the fabric.

The weaver of Marrowdale had one rule: never lay a finished cloth on the stone steps of the mill, for the river would take what it could see. Her daughter Ansel forgot this the spring the flood came early, and so the grey blanket with the diamond pattern went down into the brown water and did not come back up.

The river gave nothing back for seven days. On the eighth, a fisherman from the lower weir hauled his net and found a patch of black and white wool tangled in the reeds, the diamonds still sharp, though the rest had rotted away. He carried it up the valley to the mill and set it on the table without a word.
Ansel unpicked the corner with a bone needle. Inside the weft she found a chevron of dark thread, three strokes, the mark her mother used to sew into every hem so the cloth would know whose it was. Beneath it, pressed small as a lentil, was a heart. Her mother had never told her she had put one there. Ansel sat with the wool in her lap until the lamp burned low, then took up her own thread and began to sew the two marks onto her own wrists, one on each side, so the river would know she was still hers.
