Red blossom branch on the upper chest

Botanical · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A branch of red plum blossoms with small buds and thin black brushstroke twigs runs diagonally across the upper chest, close to the collarbone. The petals are filled with soft red ink that fades slightly at the edges, while the branches and calyx details are in solid black strokes with a loose, painterly finish. The subject is shown against pale skin and a dark navy top, with the design occupying the centre of the frame.

Dear Nan,

The ice on the wheelhouse rail was thick enough this morning that Dougie had to chip it off with a hammer before we could lift the net, so you'll forgive the smudge on this page, which is sea spray and not tears. We're eleven days out from Peterhead and have had nothing but grey cod and grey water. Skipper says the grounds are shifting east, the way they did the year you lost the grey cat, and nobody on deck believes him, but we keep steaming.

Yesterday the sky went clear for an hour and I saw the coast of Norway as a thin pencil line. I thought of your tree by the wash-house wall, the old plum Grandad grafted from a cutting he got off a Lerwick sailor. You always said it flowered before anything else in the parish had the nerve to, pink on the bare black twigs while the frost was still on the cabbages. I took a single twig from the garden shed when I left, wrapped in a tea towel, because I was daft enough to think I could keep it alive in a jam jar on the bunk. It lasted four days. Then the buds went brown and the twig went brittle, and I threw it over the side at the second-watch change without telling anyone.

I'm sorry about that. I'm not sorry about the rest of it, though. Next trip I'll be back for the fair, and you can make me sit on the wall and tell me what the blossom looks like from the lane.

Love, Ruth
