Red bow tie inside circular lettering

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

A small red bow tie with a black outline sits at the centre of a circle of black lettering. The text reads "We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one. Eh?" The bow tie is filled with solid red and the lettering is crisp and evenly spaced, with the photograph taken straight on and close up.

Dear Margaret, you will think I have lost my wits, but the man with the red bow tie came back to Haverly on Tuesday, the same as he did the summer you were away at your aunt's. He stepped off the 4:10 with a carpet bag and no coat, in weather that had the hedgerows steaming, and asked Mrs Pruett at the post office whether the bakery still did the seed loaf. It does not, I told him, not since Mr Dent's hands went. He seemed pleased by this, the way some men are pleased by bad news that confirms something.

He sat on the bench outside the chapel and I sat at the other end because there was nowhere else to sit. He asked me if I believed we were all stories in the end. I said I believed in the Co-op dividend and my mother's mangle, and he laughed so hard he had to take his spectacles off. Then he said something I have not been able to shake. He said the trick was not to worry about the ending, which is out of our hands, but to make the middle worth reading. Just make it a good one, he said, and tapped the bow tie as if it were a badge of office.

I asked him where he was going next. He said it was not a question of going, only of arriving, and that the 4:10 would take him back to wherever he had been waiting. Then the whistle went, and when I looked up the bench was empty except for a single red thread caught on the slats.

So I have decided to write my own middle, Margaret. I have bought a new loaf tin from Mr Dent's widow and I am going to bake the seed loaf myself, badly, every Tuesday. Come home soon and tell me I am daft.
