The image is warm-toned, with the person wearing a gold ribbed crop top and dark trousers, and the head is cropped out of frame.

Walter had painted shop fascias for forty years before his hands began to shake, and now he sat at the kitchen table of Quayle's Boarding House with a fine brush, a pot of black sign-writer's enamel and a sheet of card Edith had cut from a fruit crate. "Not the big letters," she said, standing over him with the teapot. "Something small. Something that doesn't shout."

He had done nothing for the house in nine weeks, not since the gas man had come and gone and the rent had gone unpaid. Edith knew it and he knew it, and neither of them said so. Outside, the wind shoved the gulls off the harbour wall and rattled the bunting nobody had taken down since the regatta.
He lettered the verse slowly, one long thin stroke for each loop, the way old Harry Penrose had taught him on the pier in 1961: Let all that you do be done in love. Beneath it, smaller still, the citation, because a verse without its address was only a rumour. When he finished, Edith read it with her lips moving, then looked at the bottom line for a long time. "Corinthians," she said. "My mother used to say that one at the sink when the lodgers were being difficult."
She pinned the card above the back stairs that evening, where the lodgers kept cracking their heads on the lintel. When the gas man came back on Friday, she met him on the step and read him the verse instead of the bill. He stood there with his clipboard for a while, then tore the bill in half and went off whistling down towards the harbour.
