Red brush circle with interlocking star and spiral
Colour · Flash
A bold red brush-stroke circle encloses a star made of straight interlocking lines, with a small spiral at its centre. The strokes are thick and uneven, with dry-brush edges and soft gradients, and the image is a single shade of red on a white background. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the star filling most of the circle.

You are the one who paints the boundary stones at Harrow Gap now, because old Tobiah's hand has gone to tremor and yours has not. Each spring you walk the line with a tin of red ochre and a brush worn to a stub, touching up the ring and the star inside it so the clerks in the valley below know where the country stops. Nobody has ever asked why the star has a curl at its heart. You suspect nobody living knows.

This year the frost lifted late and the stones were grey with lichen. Rain came sideways off the ridge while you scrubbed. At stone thirty-one a man in a wet wool coat waited on the far side with a donkey and a boy, and he would not step across until you had finished. You painted the ring, then the first slanting line, then the second, and when you reached the spiral you drew it inward, never outward, because Tobiah taught you that an outward curl lets a crossing turn into a flight.
The boy asked what it meant. You said it meant the stone was counted. He asked what happened to the ones that weren't. You told him to ask the donkey, which made him laugh, and the man nodded once and led them through the gap at the pace of the animal.
You stayed until the paint went tacky and then pressed your thumb to the centre of the spiral to be sure. The sun had finally broken through and the ochre was warm. On the back of your hand a smudge of red sat exactly where the next surveyor's ring would one day be painted over yours.
