Triquetra Celtic knot design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black triquetra, a three-pointed Celtic knot made of interlocking loops, is centred on a plain white background. The linework is solid and even, with the loops passing over and under one another and no shading. The design is in black only and fills most of the square frame.

Your thumbs are raw from the cord, and Old Brannoc takes it out of your hands without comment. He lays it flat on the bench in the lean-to behind the smithy at Vellandun, where river mist creeps under the door and beads on the copper pans. Three loops, he says, tracing them with a blackened finger. Each one must pass over a neighbour and under the next, so that no strand ever finds its way to an end. He calls it a knot with no beginning, and you say nothing, because you have already started one and cannot see where it closes.

The reeve's clerk arrives two days later wanting a seal for the grain cart, a mark that will hold the sacks shut until they reach the coast. Brannoc sets you to pressing the design into warm wax, and you draw the loops wrong, crossing the third over the first when it should go under. The clerk frowns at the smudge. Brannoc laughs, low in his chest, and says a wrong knot holds nothing but its own mistake. So you start again, following each loop with your eye alone, over, under, over, until your hand stops arguing with what your eye already knows.
When the wax has cooled, the clerk ties the cord round the cart's sacks and pulls it tight. It does not give. Brannoc watches him go down the lane with the wagon groaning behind, then glances at your palms, still red and split. Keep your hands warm, he says, and sweep the copper dust before the mist gets to it. You nod, and the knot goes on working out there on the road, three loops turning over and under one another as far as the coast.
