Red cartoon fox tattoo on an arm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stylised fox with spiky ears and a long tail is shown in flat red and orange ink with a heavy black outline. Simple shading in yellow and darker red adds some depth to the tail and body. The fox is centred on the limb, with a small section of another tattoo of green foliage visible at the lower edge of the frame.

The fox has been stealing from the Harrow boat since March, and by June you have stopped pretending to be angry about it. Every morning there is a gap in the bait bag, a neat bite through the twine, and a rust-coloured streak across the slipway that is either fox or your uncle's paint. Your uncle says it is a fox. Your uncle says a lot of things at six in the morning, most of them about the price of diesel.

So you bait a pot with a crust of Mrs Gunn's bread and wait behind the fish store with your knees in the wet. The fox comes at the turn of the tide, long tail held low, ears up like the points of a bent crown. It looks at you the way the harbour master looks at a late ferry. Then it takes the crust without hurrying and sits on the stones to eat it, eyes half shut, as if you were the one who had been caught.
Next morning you leave a tin of sardines on the coil of rope instead. It is gone by breakfast, and so is the grin you had been practising in the wheelhouse window. In its place there is a single gull feather, bright yellow at the tip, laid across the bow as neatly as a receipt.
Your uncle finds it before you do and holds it up to the light. He does not ask who left it. He only shakes his head and says the fox always did have better manners than the tourists, then goes back to painting the hull, and across the bay, on the far rocks, a flash of red moves through the dusk like a match someone has forgotten to blow out.
