A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the byre door again, so Mags Tully put her shoulder to it and swore at the hinges until they gave. Inside, the cows shifted and blew. Something sat on the hay bale by the lantern, angular and still, a cat folded out of grey card with straight edges and no softness anywhere in it. Its ears were points. Its chest was a pleat. Nobody on the farm remembered who had made it, only that it had been there since the year the old barn roof came down, and that it never once let a mouse into the feed.

Her father had said it was a thing to leave alone. Her brother had said it was a thing to burn. Mags did neither. She fetched the turnips, broke the ice on the trough, and talked to the cat the way her mother had, saying the day's troubles out loud to a creature that could not answer. The wind came down off the Cheviot and rattled the slates. Three nights running a fox came to the gate and went away again without a sound, and the cat's face, which had only ever been a single black nose and two lines for eyes, seemed to tilt towards the field.

On the fourth night the snow lay so deep that the lane was gone. Mags heard a bell on the far ridge, which was the ewes calling for help that could not reach them. She went out with the lantern. The cat did not come with her. When she looked back from the gate it was still sitting on the bale, square and patient, watching the door swing shut behind her.

She found the lost lambs by morning, huddled under the hawthorn with their breath frozen white on their wool. When she came back to the barn the bale was bare. Only a single flat fold lay in the straw, sharp as a new blade, pointing at the field.
