Single-line cat tattoo on a lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo shows a cat standing with its front paws planted apart and its tail curling up over its back. The linework is thin and continuous with little or no shading, and the details of the face and paws are simply drawn. The design is in monochrome ink on pale skin against a dark background, with the photo framed close around the calf or shin.

Sit yourself down by the range, lad, it's the only warm thing left aboard. You asked after the cat, so I'll give it you straight. Her name was Mrs Tallow. She came over the gangway at Gravesend no bigger than a biscuit tin, and by the time we raised the Horn she had the bosun's measure and half my salt pork.

The storm came on a Tuesday, or a Wednesday, I never kept good count in weather like that. The hatches were battened, the lamps swung like drunk men, and every tin on the shelf walked itself off the edge. And there was Mrs Tallow, standing square in the middle of the galley floor with her front paws planted wide, her back bowed up like a bridge and her tail curled over her spine like a question nobody would answer. She wasn't frightened. She was daring the sea to take one more step.
The second mate came down, dripping, and swore he'd put her in the bilge if she didn't shift. She looked at him the way a magistrate looks at a man with no hat, and she did not shift. He took the long way round to the stores, which was the only sensible thing anyone did that night. Then the ship heeled hard to starboard, and the copper pot of stew came off the range and skated across the boards straight for my ankles. It stopped dead against her. Nothing moved her, not the cat, not the sea, not the pot.
Come morning the wind had given up, and she sat on the sill cleaning her face as if nothing had happened. We never did get her to come down from the galley after that. The men said she'd stood her watch. Pass me that ladle, lad, and mind you don't tell the bosun I said so.
