Red goldfish on upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A red goldfish swims upward across the skin, with a rounded body, a bulbous head and long, trailing fins. The shading is soft and blended, with lighter highlights on the body and deeper red tones along the fin edges. The fish sits near the centre of the frame against plain, pale skin, with a few fingers visible at the top edge.

The man at the stall on Pell Street tips the bag toward the lamplight so you can see it: a ryukin the colour of a pillar box, its double tail already trailing like wet silk. He says it has been hungry since Tuesday and that you look like someone who won't let a thing starve. You pay him three pounds fifty you don't really have and walk home with the bag held against your coat, the way you'd shield a match from the wind.

Your flat sits above a laundrette on Carrow Lane, and at this hour the city is only buses sighing at the lights and the hum of dryers turning below. You set the bowl on the windowsill. The fish noses the glass, turns, and then, as if it has decided something, noses into the lamp's glow and begins to rise, slowly, toward the surface where the streetlight breaks into rings.
The man was wrong about one thing. Goldfish don't swim upstream, he said, not when they've got any sense, but this one has no sense at all, or else it has more than you do. You spend the night on the floor with your back against the radiator, watching it climb and drift and climb again, until the laundrette shutters rattle up at six.
By morning you have stopped pretending you were only minding it. You carry the bowl down to the canal, crouch on the cold stone, and tip the water gently over the edge. The fish goes out red into the dark, fins spread wide, still going up.
