Hannah Coyle sewed red lace for every woman in the valley who could pay for it, and that autumn she made a garter for Bess Ormerod, who had nothing else fine enough to wear.

Tomas Reel played the fiddle at every dance in the valley, and he had wagered Hannah his good bow against a shilling that her work would not last the night. She laughed and tied the bow herself, a loose double knot that her mother had taught her for brides who might want to leave early. Tomas said a garter should hold like a promise. Hannah said promises were the first things to come undone.

They danced until midnight. The bow slipped free during a reel, and the two red ribbon ends trailed down past Bess's knee as she turned. Nobody else noticed. Tomas noticed, and he slowed the tune to a waltz so that she could stoop and gather the ribbons without losing her partner. When the music ended he stood by Hannah's bench with the fiddle under his chin and did not play again.

At first light Hannah found the garter hanging on the hook by the door, rain still beaded on the lace. The bow had been retied, neatly and tight, and folded beside it was a shilling and the old bow with its frayed white ribbon, which Tomas had brought her as his forfeit.
