Crowned woman with roses and skulls on the side

Neo-trad · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A woman with red swirled hair, a crown above and dark tear-like streaks below her eyes fills the centre of the design. Two skulls sit within red roses at the lower edge, with black ink splashes framing the figure. Bold outlines and soft shading in red, orange, black and grey are set against pale skin.

The roses came up red again, which was the trouble. Queen Idony had asked for white ones in spring, and Tobiah, the gardener's boy, had only ever brought her what the soil gave him, heavy-headed and smelling of the harbour.

Under the east bed lay the seven men who had sailed her husband home from the salt wars and then been paid with a rope. Their skulls had been dug up to make room for the new lawn, then set back in the earth as a kindness, the queen said, so the roses would have something to drink. She wept over them every evening. The tears ran black down her painted cheeks, and wherever they fell the ground darkened and the roses came up crimson with a kind of hunger.

One night Tobiah found her at the balustrade with a tin cup of ink in her lap, tracing the points of her crown on her own brow with a brush. 'Shall I stop them?' he asked. She did not turn round. She said the only trick was to stop being sorry for what you had let grow, then laughed, a sound like paper tearing.

In the morning he pulled the roses from the east bed one by one and found a small dull coin beneath each, the pay the men had been given. He carried them up to the house in his apron. By the end of the week the queen's hair had lost its wildness, the skulls had gone quiet among the petals, and the roses that remained were pale as milk. Nobody in the house spoke of red again.
