Red heart in ornate frame on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A woman is photographed from behind with one hand resting on her head, showing a dark blue-grey hair bun and a shaved undercut. A red heart sits inside an ornate blue-and-grey frame on her forearm, with shaded colour and a bold dark outline. The shaved scalloped lattice at the nape is a haircut rather than a tattoo, and the image is framed against a plain grey wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ruby, Mr Pascoe found your frame under the bandstand on Tuesday, wedged behind the tin of French chalk. Its brass corners were still bright, but the enamel panel had cracked straight across the middle. The heart itself was whole, a red thing painted so wet-looking that Mrs Dyer crossed herself when she saw it on the cloakroom counter.

I have carried it in my coat pocket since, which is foolish, I know. You will want to hear that the band played Saturday as usual, Lenny Shaw losing his place in 'Moonlight Bay' twice, and that Joan Keane danced every number with the tall sailor from Chatham until the lights came up. Nobody asked me about the frame, and I think that was a kindness.

So I did what you would have done. I took it into the back room where the coats hang and held it under the bare bulb. The blue ground around the heart has been worked to look like tarnished silver, and the scrollwork curls like the iron balcony at the Grand. I found a fine brush in your old paint tin and touched up the crack in the red, which took an hour and very nearly made me late for the doors.

I am posting it on Monday. Come and collect it yourself if you can bear the floor again, or send word and I will bring it over to Sheerness on the early bus. Yours in haste, Edie.
