Mandala tattoo on the back of the head

Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink mandala sits on the back of a shaved head, with a radial flower-like centre built from layered petals and fine concentric rings. Ornate scrollwork flourishes extend down toward the neck, and the lines are crisp with shading used in the petals. The image is in black and grey against a plain white backdrop, with the head framed centrally.

Old Mother Hesketh kept the walled garden behind the mill, and every spring she sent her eldest son out with a sack of seed and the same instruction: plant from the middle outward, or the flowers will quarrel. Tobias never understood this. He sowed in rows like any sensible boy, and the marigolds came up crooked and sulked against the wall.

One wet April he dug a hole at the centre of the bed to bury a dead thrush, and the soil there was warm. Under it he found a clay disc the size of a cartwheel, scored with rings so fine they looked drawn with a single hair. Each ring ran into petals that spread outward like spokes, and along the rim curling scrolls had been pressed in, bending toward the ground as if bowing. He carried it to the kitchen. His mother set it on the table, looked at it for a long time, and went quiet.

"Put it back," she said. "Then plant over it, from the middle out, and leave the centre empty."

He did. Through the summer the bed grew in rings, the petals opening one by one as though they were counting, and the scrolls of leaves ran down the wall to the gate. By August the mill neighbours stood at the wall in their aprons and said nothing, because there was nothing to say that the flowers were not already saying.

In September the old woman died in her chair with her hands folded over the empty seed sack. Tobias buried her in the churchyard on the hill. When he came home he knelt at the bed, pushed his fingers into the warm earth at the centre, and found that it was still empty, the exact width of a man kneeling there.
