Red hibiscus on the inner wrist
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large hibiscus flower in red and pink sits on the inner wrist and lower forearm, with its five petals fully shown and a yellow stamen rising from the centre. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and darker tones where they meet, giving the flower a three-dimensional look. The flower fills most of the frame against a blurred wooden floor and a dark background.

Dear Tomasz,

The cutting you posted from Lisbon came through the letterbox squashed flat, but the stem was still green at the break, so I put it in a jam jar on the kitchen windowsill and told Mrs Okafor from flat 41 that it was a miracle. She said it was a weed. She has been saying that about everything since the lift broke in March.
It was a single bud by Sunday, and on the Thursday the whole thing opened at once, five red petals as wide as my palm with a yellow tongue sticking out of the middle like it had something to say. I stood at the window for ten minutes with the kettle boiling dry behind me. Down in the car park the boys from block C were kicking a ball against the bins, the wind off the ring road smelled of diesel, and none of that mattered.
I have moved it onto the balcony now, into the big orange pot that used to hold the dead lavender. The council man came about the damp again on Tuesday and looked at the flower for a long time before he asked what it was called. I told him hibiscus. He said he had never seen one that colour in Wythenshawe, and I said that was because nobody had ever planted one there. He laughed and wrote something on his clipboard.
Write back soon and tell me if the sea is as blue as the postcard. I will keep the flower alive until you come home to see it, if you are quick about it.
Love, Irena
